During 2017, 23,600 offences were reported regarding the assault of children. Out of these, 3,990 were against children aged between 0 and 6. It is difficult to ascertain the real extent of child abuse, since the violence is often not reported to the police when it is committed against small children.

In total, 23,600 child abuse offences were reported in 2017. This amounts to 28 per cent of all reported cases of assault. Out of these, 8,680 (37 %) were against girls and 15,000 (63 %) against boys. All in all, the level of reported assualts of children (aged 0-17) was unchanged between 2016 and 2017.
Assualt against children aged between 7 and 14 is often reported by schools, which shows in the statistics, as fewer offences are reported during the summer than in the school terms.
